Weigh in: 271.5
It's been since 1/2/25 since I checked in on this. Lost 10.5 lbs.
I've managed to maintain cutting all sugar and sticking to a diet of mostly vegetables and meats. I would call it keto but I'm trying to eat a lot more veggies than meat. Instead of noodles or rice, I've been using spring salad, and that works quite well. According to my glucose meter I'm in "light nutritional ketosis."
Notable improvements: my sleep is better and I've been waking up more easily. Maybe I have better focus? I'm not sure on that one yet. My word counts are up.
I know this first 10 pounds is mostly water weight, and this period is about establishing habits and changing my palate. My work has a cafeteria buffet that leads me to overeat. My biggest habit win has been taking my lunch to work every day and establishing new brain paths around that.
The VA Move Program is a telehealth series, and you join the program where it is, you don't have a cohort that starts from module one and goes forward. So I'm not forming any relationships with other members, but the material is good. So far we've focused on the impacts of stress on eating, the stories we tell ourselves about food and support systems. It goes by pretty fast in only an hour, but the book has a lot of info to think about.
I like to snack, and I like to feel full, so I'm working on those two major behaviors. I was also just gifted a treadmill, so I can start doing some heart rate work in the evenings. It's still too damn cold to ride my bike to work.
Thanks everyone for your support. I feel like I'm in the part of the quest where we're racing across the open plain, but the dark wood is waiting ahead where things will really get tough.
Here's to everybody's #NewYearsResolutions.
We thought Severance was coming next week, that's how severed we already are. #severence
It seemed like two factor auth via sms was broken on a lot of sites. I didn’t receive texts. I kept locking myself out of accounts from too many attempts.
Today I randomly checked my spam folder in Google Voice and discovered it had been sending all those texts AND calls to spam.

The Panasonic AJ-LT85 is a professional DVCPRO laptop editor that was released around 2000-2001. Here’s its key history and applications:
Purpose and Design
The AJ-LT85 was designed as a portable digital editing system for professional video production. It functions as a complete in-the-field editing package, featuring:
• Two independent digital VTR mechanisms
• Two built-in 6.5” color LCD monitors
• Comprehensive editing controls[1][3]
Professional Applications
The device was primarily used for:
• Field editing with studio-level quality
• Cut editing and insert editing of video, audio and timecode
• Remote interfacing for external VTR dubbing and camera recording[1][3]
Industry Usage
The AJ-LT85 found particular success in broadcast news operations:
• CNN utilized these types of portable editing systems for field production
• WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD employed three AJ-LT85 units, with two mounted in their live remote trucks for news production[8]
Technical Features
The system offered several professional capabilities:
• Used 1/4-inch DVCPRO tapes
• Featured RS-422A video/audio inputs/outputs
• Included timecode input/output for synchronized recording
• Housed in a durable yet lightweight diecast aluminum case[1][3]
The AJ-LT85 represented an important step in portable professional video editing, combining professional features with field mobility during the early 2000s transition to digital video production. #retrotech #cyberdeck, #panasonic
Sweet Cyberdeck project. The keyboard is too small or me. I need the quotes/apostrophe key, but otherwise this is a really slick design.

I've got my a #weightloss mountain to climb this year. I'm currently at 280 pounds, the heaviest in my life. If you follow BMI, I'm supposed to be at 175. I would like to be at 200.
I feel vaguely out of breath during any movement beyond leaving the couch and my snoring is out of control. My clothes don't fit well, and I just generally feel weaker than I have at any other time in my life.
Between the regular challenges of life, I've got a six year old and an 84 year old I'm taking care of, so I'll be looking for other ways to exercise, primarily biking to work. Also tracking diet more closely.
I know it's lame to only focus on this stuff at the New Year, but you have to start sometime, right?
I'm enrolled in the VA's Move program starting next week, which is supposed to be pretty good. And I'm looking into GLP1 options. I was skeptical about the drug route, but all signs seem to be pointing toward positive results for people in my situation.
I'm fortunate that my blood pressure and lab work are consistently good. Type 2 Diabetes runs in my family, and I've reached the point where I can't ignore it anymore.
So here come the weigh ins. As they liked to say at my soul sucking Target job, what isn't tracked can't be improved...

Great write-up on using a #Thinkpad x61 in 2024.
I have an x61 but it's a bit small for long writing sessions. I prefer my T61 for regular use. If I need something more beefy, it works great as a remote terminal for another machine. I get to keep using the great keyboard and smooth plastics.

I think the bit the author is missing is that you probably need to dip a toe in all the various platforms if you're going to operate as if they could disappear in 3 years.
I prefer Mastodon and its ethos, but I understand the criticisms. If Bluesky becomes the busy party, that's fine with me. I get irritated with Facebook, but I like the way it manages identity. I don't have to worry that the people I interact with most on Facebook (and Instagram) are bots.

"No front porches. My uncle says there used to be front porches. And people sat there sometimes at night, talking when they wanted to talk, rocking, and not talking when they didn't want to talk. Sometimes they just sat there and thought about things, turned things over. My uncle says the architects got rid of the front porches because they didn't look well. But my uncle says that was merely rationalizing it; the real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn't want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that was the wrong KIND of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with the porches."

This is my first #JustDance game for the Switch. First had to download the game.
Then update. Then log into #Ubisoft account. Couldn’t bypass. Fortunately password still worked but was a pain to enter using the joy con.
Then their servers were slammed and we couldn’t download any songs. Sweet.
#Shrinking on Apple is such therapy porn. I’m getting really sick of how everybody gets what they want.
I also hate hate that a caregiver told Gaby she was a terrible person for hiring someone to help with her mother. That’s exactly what caregivers are for and why the profession exists.
RE: making friends as an adult.
The article on making friends as an adult that spawned this Hacker News discussion is pretty bad, but I found the discussion interesting.
I feel like I lost a lot of friends to facebook and other social media. Many of my friends now, I don't even know if they have social media and I don't care. If I want to know how they're doing, I call them and we hang out.
I've learned that #friendship is verb, just like love in a marriage. It's hard when kids and life get in the way, but I try not to let that get to me. I know it's hard for people to make plans, so I try to be the person who does it and don't get bent if friends don't reach out first.
As Zig Ziglar said, "If you going out trying to find a friend, friends are scarce. If you go out trying to be a friend, friends are everywhere."

At the Asian grocery stocking up on stocking stuffers.
And I suppose if you’ve got a critical voice in your head always tearing you down, that’s the LLM in your subconscious trying to protect itself.
This has me thinking about a future where we're all carrying a dark brother/sister who critiques our every action.
Quote: "This is fun of course, but as a developer you can trivially and with high accuracy guard against it by having a second model critique the conversation between the user and the primary LLM."

What is a heterotopia? These posts led to the question: A heterotopia is a concept introduced by the French philosopher Michel Foucault to describe real-world places that function as “other spaces,” existing simultaneously within and outside of the usual norms and structures of society. These spaces are characterized by their ability to juxtapose or connect several different spaces, times, … Continue reading https://www.jamesaaron.net/2024/12/20/what-is-a-heterotopia/
